Several
members assembled at the church in Santa Clara for our May meeting and
workshop. Kathy again ably facilitated the meeting.
Announcements:
May 18 is the deadline for slide submission for the Santa Cruz Fiber
Art Show.
Member Judy Martin beautifullly showcased her fiber art at a one woman
show on Sun. May 6 at the Fremont Hills Country Club in Los Altos
Hills. Pathways Hospice hosted the benefit event. Judy has
long volunteered for that organization.
Diana Leone hosts an open studio with other artists May 12 & 13.
1005 Highland Cir. #107 Los Altos.
Topic: Retreat
Despite numerous obtacles, including the sale of the retreat venue,
Dolores hasn't given up. In fact, she's made great
progress. Our group has the right of first refusal from the new
owners for Jan. 25-27, 2008. This is at the Best Western Capitola
where we will have access to a large conference room.
Rates/availabilty pending new ownership and management of the hotel.
Topic: Quilt Show
Discussion:While members have voiced some interest in having another
show, no person or persons has come forward to chair the event.
That is a problem we probably need to resolve before going too much
farther ahead with this project. In the interim, Terry Micene
reported that the small gallery at the Museum of Quilts and Textiles is
available after Jan. 2008. If we'd like to used the hallway also,
the show would have to be held closer to the summer. One
additional idea under consideration is to work in conjunction with the
Morgan Hill Harvest Festival and explore grouping our entries together
as a cohesive exhibit. Shanti had arranged for us to explore this
idea with a representative of that group. However, the contact
person was unable to attend the meeting. Members may look at the
website for this group. The quilt show, part of A Taste of Morgan
Hill, is held under the auspices of the Morgan Hill Chamber of Commerce
www.morganhill.org/tasteofmh/quilt-show.htm.
Resolution: Look for a chair person or persons and continue to consider
locations.
Topic: Membership
Discussion: A member observed that we have fewer dues-paying
members now than we did in our heyday when we met at the church in
Mountain View. The website lists us as "more than 100
artists". Some speculated that we lost membership once we made
the transition to meeting in Santa Clara, from Mountain View.
Others suggested that having only a web presence alone might not give
us as broad an exposure as we'd like. The thought was that
perhaps we might bolster membership by distributing flyers at quilt
shops or quilt shows.
Resolution: Dolores offered to email information for a flyer or
postcard to Bronwyn who offered to duplicate it and deliver to the info
table at the Santa Clara Valley Quilt Show this weekend at the Santa
Clara Convention Center.
Following show 'n tell, Diana Leone led us in a dynamic workshop
focusing on abstraction using acrylics on cloth. Best of all,
each of us left with a large, completed painting on canvas! Diana
generously reviewed some of her past work and previewed innovative new
work. If you didn't attend, some of that work plus more will be
on display at this weekend's open studio (see announcements).
Don't miss it!! Many, many thanks to Diana for sharing her
talents, materials, and philosophy with us. The workshop felt
enriching on many levels.
Recall that we will have our regular meeting in July plus a workshop
with Laura Wasilewski later that month. Go forth and create!
