Workshop Information
This Saturday after the show and tell we will have a workshop on
SHADOWS. There are different ways to add shadows and therefore depth
and a 3D look to art quilts.
Linda Cline and Kathy Murrary discussed the way to have a workshop for
this and here is the idea:
Kathy will bring some items and create one or two still lifes with
shadows created by a "chicken lamp". Each person will use their bag of
scraps to create an impressionistic still life with shadows. The
shadows could be achieved with darker fabrics or with diluted black
textile paint (Kathy will bring paint). The fabric scraps can be cut to
shape and glued on with glue stick for later sewing, or you can bring
fusible scraps and iron them on. (Kathy will bring ironing board/iron)
What to bring:
Fabric scraps and background peice(s) - pre-fused or bring fusible web
Cotton Batting (Hobbs Heirloom or something similar)
Scissors
Glue stick
Textile paint (black, blue, purple)

Topic: Diana Leone Workshop
Discussion: Diane Carver reviewed the list of materials for Diana's May
workshop on painting on fabric (see addendum). Diana generously offered
to share her expertise with us. The materials fee is $10 if one
provides one's own paint and $20 if Diana provides paint.
Resolution: Yahoo poll went out asking preferences so that Diane can
give Diana some idea of the amount of material to provide. Please vote.
Topic: July 28 Laura Wasilowski workshop
Discussion: Julie indicated via telephone that there are 8 spaces
remaining in workshop. Cost is $55. Members debated whether or not to
hold the July meeting scheduled for July 14 in addition to the workshop
on the 28. Most folks did not want to do business at the workshop.
Resolution: Group will meet as usual on July 14. Workshop is an
additional meeting.
Topic: Retreat
Discussion: Dolores gets the perseverance award for extraordinary
persistence in getting the retreat set up in an economical and
accessible location. The new location is the Best Western in Capitola,
a place where the local quilting group holds meetings, workshops. The
place has a large conference room for which we will receive one day
rental free if we rent 10 hotel rooms. Added bonus- the hotel is
located next to a fabric store! Regrettably, the hotel is unavailable
for our scheduled November 2007 retreat date.
Resolution: The group voted to change the date of the retreat to
January 2008 to use the Capitola location.
Topic: Quilt Show
Discussion: Finding a suitable location for a group show has been a
stumbling block. Judy Roberts had previously offered some suggestions.
Resolution: Terri offered to look into the cost and general feasibility
of holding the show at the the Museum of Quilts & Textiles. And
Shanti will visit a community center space in Morgan Hill to check out
its suitability.
Show & Tell showcased everything from the journal quilt page of the
month to challenges to a novel ! Maureen reported on her experience
with Jane Dunnewold's DVD set called, Complex Cloth ($70). Not only did
Maureen give the DVD on dyeing and silkscreen a good review but she
shared samples of the various techniques. She also showed a sample of
fabric she made using the Sunlight Dishwasher gel as a base
for a monoprint (popularized by Liz Berg). Later, even Shanti's
daughter passed around an oil painting she'd done.
Finally, Linda Cline provided written expertise and online examples for
a mini workshop on shadowing. Kathy set up a still life under a light
so we could execute projects incorporating shadows. Thanks to both
Linda and Kathy for their efforts. Perhaps OUR efforts will manifest at
next meeting's Show & Tell!
