The
July 8 workshop will be conducted by several CQFA members and
feature techniques involved with painting on fabric. Caroline Ogg
will show samples and share information from several classes she has
taken from well known teachers who included fabric painting in their
presentations. Jan Scardina (via Nancy Riffle) will bring water
color crayons and pencils and other supplies that Velda Newman uses to
add dimension to her quilted objects. Finally, Dolores Miller
will lead a hands-on SUNPAINTING exercise, expanding from the
information on the Dharma Trading Co. website
http://www.dharmatrading.com/info/sun_paint.html
To participate in this workshop, please bring:
1.) White fabric, pre-washed and ironed, a yard or so. Cotton
works best but rayon and polyester blends work, too.
2.) Apron or protective clothing.
3.) Items to print with- leaves and other natural elements, paper
doilies, charms, keys, almost anything that will lay flat on the
fabric.
4.) Scissors to cut paper and tissue; various paper edging
scissors if you have them.
5.) Broad paint brushes, bristle or foam.
6.) Various jars and cups for water and brushes. Paper towels for
cleanup
7.) Optional- tissue paper, color fast and bleeding (Michaels carries
both kinds)
Dolores will be supplying the Setacolor transparent paint (though
if anyone else has some you might bring it). She will also bring
plastic sheeting and materials to make support boards from as well as
two lamps (just in case the sun decides not to cooperate).

Meeting Minutes
Submitted by Maureen Lardie
July 8, 2006
Nineteen people attended our July meeting. Kathy acted as moderator.
Dolores updated us on plans for the Asilomar retreat in the fall of
2007. The poll that was conducted showed that Veterans Day weekend was
the first choice. Cost will include two nights lodging (Fri-Sun), meals
and a meeting room. Dolores brought to our attention several things.
Asilomar accepts reservations one year in advance and requires a $500
deposit (total) at that time. It was decided to require a
non-refundable deposit from our members at the time of our reservation
(Individual deposit = $500 divided by members going). This will be
discussed further at the September 2006 meeting and nailed down in
November. We voted to have the retreat be mainly individual work with
demos by anyone who cared to offer. Julie volunteered to be facilitator
of that portion.
There was a discussion of teachers we might be interested in inviting
for 2007 workshops. Julie offered to research since she knows many of
these teachers personally: Liz Berg (color), Vicky Johnson (painting),
Lura Schwarz, and Marcia Stein.
Terri (as SJ Quilt and Textile Museum Liason) announced the upcoming
exhibits at the museum. Katherine Westerhout, Julie John Upshaw and
Virginia Davis will be exhibiting from July 18 to October 1.The Santa
Cruz Art League exhibition contains work by Bonnie, Julie and Debbie
until July 30th. For more: www.scal.org.We saw eighteen works at Show
and Tell including an exquisite paper quilt (Jan), a tie-dye t-shirt
(Deepti), a cut-work scarf (Debbie), and a quilt the size of a
continent (Jean).A workshop on sunpainting and other techniques
followed, led by Dolores, Jan and Caroline.
