Shanti Subramanyam

Shanti Subramanyam started quilting in 1996 with the making of two small traditional quilts. She quickly got bored with making multiple copies of the same block and started designing her own quilts.

Shanti is mostly a self-taught quilter but she is an avid reader and has devoured many quilt books and magazines. She tends to favor landscapes and finds inspiration for her quilts during the many travels with her family.

Shanti Subramanyam's Quilts

"Morn In The Forest"

Morn In The Forest

37 inches x 40 inches

This quilt was inspired by the many national parks that Shanti has visited with her family.

The background was created by strip-fusing to show the effects of light creeping into the forest. The leaves were done using the "Snippets" technique. The deer were thread-painted separately and then appliqued. A combination of commercial and hand-dyed fabrics were used and the entire piece is heavily quilted.

"Venice"

Venice

24 inches x 19 inches

"Venice" was created from photographs taken during a trip to Italy in the summer of 2004. All the buildings were created entirely from graded hand-dyed fabrics dyed by the artist to show the effect of the sun on the narrow waterway and the surrounding buildings.
